Maori student numbers have increased at Otago University by ten per cent over the same time last year.

Enrolment figures show there are now more than 17,000 full-time equivalent students at the University, with Maori students making up ten per cent of the University's overall student numbers.

Maori students have reached population parity for admissions into medicine, the University's most competitive undergraduate programme.

One Maori student told TVNZ1's Te Karere they chose Otago University for its reputation.

"I chose Otago because of the reputation it held within the health sciences area and because it was far enough away from home," they said.

It's expected the number of Maori students at Otago University will reach the 2000 mark later this year.
