Police are searching for a man who robbed a Cash Converters with a weapon in Palmerston North last week.

The man brandished a weapon at a Cash Converters employee shortly before midday on Thursday, May 3, before taking an undisclosed sum of money.

Manawatu Detective Steve Field said the man was seen fleeing the scene by several witnesses but the entire details of his escape are unclear.

"He then ran down Berryman's Lane, across Broadway Avenue, through the Regent Arcade and the UCOL carpark before witnesses lost sight of him on Ngata Street," Detective Field said.

"We believe he then got into the passenger seat of a vehicle and was driven away from the area."

The man was wearing a two-toned grey hooded jacket, black pants and a black cap.

Palmerston North Police are asking the public for help identifying the man who was caught on CCTV.

"Somebody in our community will know who this man is, either because they recognise him or they drove him away from Ngata Street," Detective Field said.

"We are taking this very seriously, and we want people to feel safe in their homes and at places of work."

The Cash Converters employee is being supported by Victim Support, police said.

Detective Field is encouraging anyone with information to contact him on 06 213 9652 or provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
