Man shot and killed by police in Bay of Plenty after armed bank robbery and chase

Police say they have shot a man, killing him, after a bank robbery, family harm incident, and police chase this morning.

Bay of Plenty Police were alerted to reports of the first two incidents in the Kawerau area about 9am, they said, and soon after located a vehicle believed to be involved, before attempting to pull it over.

The driver fled but was eventually stopped on State Highway 30 about 10.20am.

A man was shot by police before being given first aid, but he died at the scene.

Police said full details of the incident will be released once they are available.

First Credit Union posted on Facebook saying that their Kawerau branch on Fletcher Ave will be closed today "due to an armed robbery this morning".

News Whakatane is reporting the man left with an undisclosed amount of cash, and that there were no injuries.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
