Police say he was involved in a domestic abuse incident last night in the Wellington region.
Negotiators were called to get him off the roof of Gerry's Charcoal Chicken and Cooked Seafoods on Keys St.
"Our main concern is to get him down safely" a police spokesperson said.
Owner of the restaurant Kosta Bouras says the man has been up there since about 7am and all emergency services are at the scene.
He says "I am not allowed to leave the building".
A local working in the area says lots of people are standing by to watch.
