According to police, the alleged offender fired on them first before they returned fire.

The man shot and killed by police after a bank robbery, family harm incident and chase in Kawerau this morning was a Mongrel Mob gang member who police say was high on methamphetamine.

Bay of Plenty police were alerted to reports of the first two incidents in the Kawerau area about 9am, they said, and soon after located a vehicle believed to be involved before attempting to pull it over.

The driver fled and tried to ram a police car before eventually stopping of his own accord on State Highway 30 at about 10.20am, according to authorities.

Police said he then pulled out a firearm and shot at officers, who returned fire - hitting the man.

First aid was given, but the man died at the scene.

Police say the man was a 29-year-old patched Mongrel Mob member.

First Credit Union posted on Facebook saying that their Kawerau branch on Fletcher Ave will be closed today "due to an armed robbery this morning".

According to police, the man who was later shot and killed robbed the bank with a shotgun.

No police staff were injured in the incident.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority is conducting an investigation into the incident.
