Robert Galdamez is believed to be from Melbourne and was last seen in the Ben Lomond walking track area yesterday wearing blue Nike shoes, black sports leggings and a green puffer jacket.
He later messaged a friend that he was lost and uncomfortable with where he was as it was getting dark, reports NZN.
Mr Galdamez was only prepared for a day walk and had no food and very little water, Sergeant Terry Wood told the Otago Daily Times.
Queenstown Police Search and Rescue teams are continuing to search for the tourist, and want to hear from a man who was seen about 10 minutes from the Ben Lomond Summit between 5.30pm and 6.30pm last night.
The man is described as being in his 40's with a bald head and grey stubble, he was wearing a red or pink t-shirt and khaki pants, he might be a local to the area police say.
