A man has been found dead in the Awanui River near Kaitaia in the Far North today.
Emergency services were called to the river at 10.40am this morning.
Police say the man, in his 50s, died after getting into difficulty in the water.
Local Iwi have since carried out a blessing at the river and placed a rāhui on the site for five days.
His death will be referred to the Coroner.
