Man faces charges after allegedly fleeing police in hour-long journey from Warkworth to South Auckland

A man has been taken into custody and faces charges after allegedly trying to evade police in a vehicle, from the northern end of Auckland to the city's south.

Police tried to pull over a "suspicious vehicle" in Warkworth at 1.15pm today, Inspector Jason Homan says is a statement.

He says the the vehicle failed to stop and fled from Police.

Police pursued the vehicle but abandoned the pursuit a short time later after losing sight of the vehicle.

The Police Eagle helicopter monitored the vehicle as it travelled south down the Kaipara Coast Highway to Otahuhu. No police vehicles on the ground pursued.

"The vehicle was observed by eagle travelling in an erratic and dangerous manner," Mr Homan says.

"Due to the risk posed to the public by the dangerous driving of the vehicle, Police spiked the vehicle in Otahuhu."

The alleged offender was taken into custody at around 2.30pm in Station Road, Penrose.

He will be facing a number of charges.
