The identity of the man who died while working on a fishing vessel off the coast of Banks Peninsula has been released.

Police say 26-year-old Steffan Antony Stewart of New Plymouth was the worker who died around 4am yesterday morning.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened an inquiry after the fatal accident on board the New Zealand registered fishing vessel, San Granit.

"Circumstances reported to date are that a crew member was fatally injured on the factory deck of the vessel," said Captain Tim Burfoot, Chief Investigator of Accidents.

The Commission opens an inquiry when it believes the circumstances of an accident or incident have - or are likely to have - significant implications for transport safety, or when the inquiry may allow the Commission to make findings or recommendations to improve transport safety.
