Man charged with murder after 27-year-old woman found dead in Christchurch residence

A 54-year-old man has been charged who is acquainted with the victim after a robbery "gone wrong" in a Merivale yesterday.

A man's been charged with murder after the body of a 27-year-old woman was found by a member of the public in the Christchurch suburb of Merivale yesterday morning.

Detective inspector Darryl Sweeney spoke to the press following the death of a 27-year-old woman at a Merivale property yesterday.

The 54-year-old man's been charged with murder and aggravated robbery.

Police have yet to release the victim's name, but say the pair knew each other, but were not in a relationship.

A huge police presence are today camped at Exeter St, Merivale, after a 27-year-old woman was found dead at a residence yesterday.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney told media this morning, "They are acquainted, but it's not a relationship as such. They are known to each other."

"A police team of dedicated officers have already worked tirelessly to ensure justice for the victim and her family. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the young lady. Police will ensure they're being supported following their loss," he said.

"No-one else is being sought in relation to the death, but police would like to hear from anyone who noticed any suspicious behaviour in and around Exeter Street, Carlton Mill, or the wider Merivale area on Friday night."

The accused will appear in the Christchurch District Court in the morning.
