Man charged with attempted murder after woman, 18, stabbed on busy central Auckland street

A man is helping police with their inquiries after the Anzac Ave incident.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a woman in broad daylight on a busy Auckland street yesterday.

Appearing in the Auckland District Court before Judge Kim Saunders, the defendant was granted interim name suppression after his lawyer argued it would cause extreme hardship for the defendant and his family if his identity was made public.

The woman, also 18, was outside a Wilson car park yesterday afternoon when the man allegedly stabbed her with a knife, before dropping the weapon and fleeing the scene.

Members of the public helped treat the woman's injuries before she was transported to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.

Police say the two are known to each other.

An Auckland Hospital spokesperson says the victim's condition is now serious, but stable.

The defendant has been remanded in custody, and is due to appear in the Auckland District Court next month.
