No one else was treated for injury at the scene.

Police have arrested and charged a 28-year-old man after a 31-year-old woman was critically injured by a gunshot wound at an address at Helensville in northwest Auckland early this morning.

The 28-year-old man is charged with wounding with reckless disregard and unlawful possession of a firearm following the incident in Mill Road just before 4am.

He is due to appear in Waitakere District Court on Monday.

The victim has undergone surgery today and remains in Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition, said Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Megan Goldie.

She faces further surgery and a long road to recovery, Ms Goldie said in a statement this evening.

Police are supporting her family, she added.

Police are continuing to make enquiries into the incident and are completing the scene examination, Ms Goldie said.

As the matter is now before the court, police is not in a position to comment further, she said.

Earlier today a police spokesperson said two men and a woman were helping with inquiries.
