Man charged after suspected explosive device, ammunition found at Christchurch property

Police have charged a man after a suspected explosive device and ammunition was found at an address in Phillipstown.

Police say a 33-year-old Christchurch man has been arrested and charged over the incident at a vacant address.

They say the man will appear in court tomorrow on firearms related charges.

Police say the New Zealand Defence Force EOD team rendered the package safe.

Houses on Newcastle, Glasgow and Harrow streets were evacuated as a precaution.

The cordons have now been lifted and police have thanked residents for their patience.
