A man has been arrested and charged after a man was critically injured in a serious assault in Hawke's Bay last night.

Police were called to a property on Campbell Street, in Wairoa, just before 6.30pm following reports of two men fighting, Acting Detective Sergeant Brent Griffiths said.

Police say that on arrival they found a 30-year-old man with serious injuries to his head and chest.

He was airlifted to Hawke's Bay Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A second man was found at the property with minor injuries.

The two men were known to each other, police said.

A 38-year-old man has since been arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He remains in police custody and is due to appear in the Gisborne District Court next week.

Gisborne and Wairoa police are conducting a scene examination today, and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
