Man arrested over murder of Australian man nearly two decades ago granted interim name suppression

A man arrested over a historic Australian murder has been granted interim name suppression.

The man appeared in Auckland's Waitakere District Court for extradition proceedings this afternoon.

His defence counsel, Mathew Goodwin, argued the man hadn't enough time to speak with his family and inform them of his current situation, and that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Mr Goodwin also argued that his counsel may seek name suppression in Australia.

Judge Kevin Glubb agreed to supress his name on the grounds it could ruin the man's right to a fair trial if name suppression was granted in Australia.

Although the man doesn't have a current passport, he is expected to arrive in Australia next week after sorting some paperwork.
