A 37-year-old man has been arrested after fleeing from officers and attempting multiple carjackings in Takanini.

The man was pulled over in a vehicle by police on Hill Road, Manurewa, at 3:45 this afternoon but the suspect failed to stop.

Road spikes were used to stop the fleeing driver a short while later.

However, the driver continued to flee and the police pursuit was called off for safety reasons.

Senior Sergeant John Roberts says, “police have to finely balance the need to apprehend the offender whilst attempting to keep the public safe".

"After police stopped following, the driver went on to drive on the wrong side of the road at speed."

The driver then pulled over on great South Road, Takanini, at 4pm, where he attempted to carjack a number of vehicles nearby.

The man was transported to Middlemore Hospital after receiving injuries to his ankle during the incident.

Police would like to speak with people who were approached by the man on Great South Road, Takanini, around the time of the incident.

Members of the public with information have been advised to contact Counties Manukau Police station on 09 261 1300, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
