Bodi McKee, 23, was arrested last month after 32-year-old Manurewa man Leslie Putt was fatally shot in the stomach on Winsford Street.

At the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday, McKee's lawyer entered a not guilty plea to a charge of murder and another of unlawful possession of a firearm.

A trial date has been set down for August 7 next year.

As McKee was led away, a group in the public gallery loudly swore at the accused across the court, one shouting: "Be a man. Plead guilty".

Mr Putt died despite the attempts of paramedics to save him following a shooting at about 7am on September 24.

Police said they believed he was staying at the house and had arrived the night before.
