Properties are being evacuated as fire crews battle a large scrub fire in Rolleston.
The Fire Service says no properties are under immediate threat, however a number of residents in the area have been evacuated as a precaution.
The blaze is contained to one area at this stage and cordons are in place on Wild Road between Maddisons Road and Newtons Road. Police say Wilds Road is likely to be closed at least until about 4pm.
Thirteen fire appliances and tankers are at the scene with the NZ Fire Service command unit from Christchurch.
A helicopter equipped with a monsoon bucket is being refilled from private swimming pools in the area.
Officials are asking the public to stay away from the area where possible.
Canterbury Police and Fire Service investigators will conduct a scene examination to determine the cause of the fire when it is safe to do so.
