Police and fire crews were called to the incident at the Blind and Low Vision Education Network NZ Homai Campus school in Manukau around midnight.
The driver hit the two-inch gas main valve which was above the ground.
Police cordoned off the area to investigate.
There were no reported injuries and the job has since been closed, said a fire spokesperson.
