Magnitude 5.2 earthquake rattles Gisborne region

October 7, 2019

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake has hit a small inland settlement near the Gisborne region this afternoon.

The earthquake happened just before 4.30pm and occurred 20 kilometres northwest of Matawai.

There were mostly reports of moderate shaking but GeoNet has reported several others have felt a strong impact from it.

More than 2500 residents reported feeling the temblor.
