Magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattles central New Zealand

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake has rattled central New Zealand this afternoon.

The quake, centred 65km north of French Pass, hit at a depth of 124km at 3:30pm today.

GeoNet reported the intensity of the shake was "light".

It's been felt by well over 4,000 people thus far, from Nelson to North Taranaki.

Most people reported feeling weak to light shaking.
