Mackenzie District Councillor outlines community effort to signpost dangerous road

Paul Hannagan put the word out on Facebook and the community responded

A councillor who asked for help on Facebook to build a road safety sign at a dangerous intersection has received some encouraging news from the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Mackenzie District Councillor Paul Hannagan built a road sign warning motorists of the dangers following a fatal accident at the intersection of Mt Cook Rd and State Highway 8 on Wednesday.

Today, while being interviewed by 1 NEWS, he said the NZTA responded to his signs and will install a camera at the dangerous intersection.

"It was just for the immediate reaction, knowing and expecting that NZTA would have to wait for the police report which can take up to three months and then do their analysis.

"As it turns out they’re here today which is a fantastic response, but we thought we'd put something up in the meantime just to hopefully stop another accident," he says.

Mr Hannagan says the agency will now install a traffic camera so it can get "a proper handle on the situation" and will meet in South Canterbury on Wednesday to address the road.

When told about the developments Mr Hannagan says he was "over the moon" and was going to do his "pelvic thrusty dance".

He says there will be a party when the sign comes down.
