Police were notified just after 10.30am that a helicopter that had left Franz Josef to pick up two hunters from the Poerua Glacier was overdue.

An emergency beacon had also been activated.

The helicopter was found on the glacier about an hour later.

The two hunters are reported to have minor injuries, while the pilot, who was initially trapped in the cockpit, was also hurt.

All three have been taken to the Hari Hari Medical Centre on the West Coast.
