'It lowers the tone' - Manager of Hawera cinema which banned PJs and dirty gumboots defends her decision

April 24, 2018

Kirsty Bourke of the Hawera Cinema says restaurants and clubs have had dress codes for years and no one complained.

A cinema in the Taranaki town of Hawera is standing firm on a decision to ban people wearing pyjamas.

Hawera Cinemas took to Facebook on Friday to post their dress code, which bans "pyjamas, onesies, dressing gowns or dirty gumboots -- no matter how cute they are!"

"Like many other businesses and people in town we have noticed an increasing trend of people thinking pj's/onesies and dressing gowns are appropriate to wear in public," wrote Hawera Cinema 2.

"It is not the vibe or environment we want to encourage here at Hawera Cinemas."

The stance has got the cinema publicity internationally and triggered a big debate on social media.

Manager Kirsty Bourke told TVNZ's Breakfast programme today there had been overwhelming support for the dress code.

"We believe if we didn't take a stand on this we would actually lose more customers," she said.

If people turn up in PJs they will be refused entry, she said.

"PJs are private stay-at-home attire, not to be seen in public," Ms Bourke said.

People should wear cosy, comfortable street attire to the cinema, she said.

The Hawera Cinema complex is an independently operated cinema, operated by a trust on behalf of the South Taranaki community.
