December 18, 2017

Jacinda Ardern and James Shaw aim to have the country be carbon neutral by 2050.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Climate Change Minister James Shaw have used a post-cabinet stand up to announce the Zero Carbon Bill will be introduced by the Government next year.

Ms Ardern said there is "a lot of work to be done" before the bill is put into law next October.

"This week we are announcing the first steps towards a Zero Carbon Act, where we will help draft the legislation next year as well as talking about the role of an independent climate commission," she said.

Mr Shaw reiterated that this Government aims to put the framework in place for having net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

"Cabinet has agreed to a process of consultation in 2018, before the Zero Carbon Bill is introduced.

"I'm looking forward to engaging in conversations with New Zealanders next year as together we design the framework for New Zealand to transition to a sustainable economy," he said.

Ms Ardern also outlined that before the Christmas break the Government would be introducing the bill on medicinal cannabis to the house as well as having the first reading of the foreign buyer ban.
