Lime 'taking on board concerns' about safety of their scooters

October 25, 2018

The scooters are being launched in Auckland and Christchurch, and can be found using a smartphone app.

E-scooter company Lime says it is entering discussions with NZTA, Auckland Transport and Christchurch City Council to talk about the safety of their scooters.

Lime rolled out hundreds of the electric ride-on scooters in Auckland and Christchurch on October 15, and has plans for more to be added.

The company said today they had recorded 40,186 unique riders following their launch.

A number off ACC claims have already been received both in Auckland and Christchurch from people who have injured themselves on the scooters and Auckland Mayor Phil Goff this morning ordered an urgent safety report to be produced about Lime scooters after Councillor Christine Fletcher was almost hit by someone riding one.

Both the Government and Auckland Council are reviewing regulations for the popular new form of transport.

Lime spokesperson Hank Rowe said "in order to unlock a Lime scooter for the first time, all riders must first complete in-app tutorials that provide guidelines on helmet safety".

"Users must abide by all the same city and state laws as if they were operating their own cars, bikes or scooters, while Lime's scooters can reach 25km per hour, it is up to the rider to deem what speed is reasonable based off of their surroundings.

"We are taking on board concerns that have been raised about the safety of riders and pedestrians.

"In order to address these concerns and increase the safety of our riders, Lime will be hosting a Rider Safety Summit in the next week to educate users on the importance of responsible scooter usage."
