'Like a big truck going by' - Shallow earthquake rocks eastern North Island

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake has rattled the eastern part of the North Island this morning.

GeoNet reported the “moderate” quake took place at 8.25am about 15 kilometres northwest of Gisborne. 

Its depth was 20km.  

As of 8.40am, more than 500 people reported they felt the quake. Most reports were around Gisborne and the Central North Island.
