Lifesaving season has begun and it was off to a chilly start

October 21, 2017

It was a horror toll last season when 21 people drowned, lifeguards are hoping for a safer season.

Flags were out for the first time this season today and lifeguards bravely welcomed in the next five months of lifesaving season, despite the cooler temperatures.

Last year the amount of drownings were the highest they had been since 2011, at 21.

There was also over 600 rescued from life threating situations and 1200 assisted back to the beach.

Lifeguards are working to change this by working later into the evening to protect more families for longer.
