Levin motorist racks up tickets as doppelganger plate causes confusion

Personalising a motor with a personalised plate has been problematic for Shaun.

About a year ago Shaun Bartosh bought a lime green Dodge Challenger Hellcat - it’s flashy, grunty, and very fast.

Then in August this year Shaun started getting speeding tickets for a Dodge Challenger Hellcat with what looked like the same number plate.

The trouble was - it wasn’t Shaun doing the speeding, and it wasn’t the same number plate. His plate has the number 0, which has a slash through it. The other number plate is the letter O  - no slash.

Shaun then tried to sort this out by explaining the “twin car” situation to the Police Infringement Bureau. But after three months and multiple tickets, with the same explanation being provided multiple times, he gave up and came to Fair Go.

Police say yes, they came up short on this one, it was human error and they’ve apologised to Shaun. They say the almost identical cars with very similar number plates made things very tricky.

They say they can’t red-flag their system in cases like this, but they do run random quality assurance testing to try to reduce errors, and the error rate is 0.0003 per cent.

Because of the time lag, they can‘t now re-ticket the other car with the notices which Shaun received in error, but Police say they’ll look at ways they can try to stop this happening again to Shaun, or to anyone else.
