Latest Auckland fruit fly incursion expected to cost at least $1 million

About 60 staff are checking traps and going door-to-door in Devonport.

The cost of Devonport's fruit fly incursion is expected to coast at least $1 million.

The Biosecurity Minister visited the Auckland suburb today to meet with field staff on the ground following the discovery of a single fruit fly in the area on Thursday.

Around 60 biosecurity staff are checking traps and going door-to-door inside the exclusion zone to check fruit and vegetable gardens.

Minister Damien O'Connor said only a single male Queensland fruit fly has been discovered.

"We hope that it's just the one fly, but we're not focused on the cost," Mr O'Connor said.

"There's an operational plan that's been agreed on. We'll go through that plan thoroughly and ensure we get to a point where we can say absolutely there are no more flies."

Mr O'Connor said trading partners have been notified about the fruit fly discovery, but no exports have been affected at this stage.
