Large crowds push for pay equity for women in education

May 5, 2018

The NZEI union says it's pleased with the number of people who turned out around the country.

Large crowds of protesters gathered across the country today in support of pay equity for women in education.

The NZEI union says it hopes the Government will step up and deliver fair pay which reflects the highly-skilled work they do.

NZEI national secretary Paul Goulter says the issue is not exclusive to the education sector but it is a good start.

"It's right across the board, right throughout the public service and into the private sector as well," Mr Goulter said.

"These have been long-standing injustices and it's time to fix them. So in education, we've got groups like support workers, teacher aids, early childhood educators, administrators in schools. They've been waiting patiently for a long time and now we're going to fix it."

The E tu union, which supports workers from eight different industries, has also put its support behind the issue.
