Kiwimeter: Nationalism, sport the top Kiwi values

More than 80,000 people have completed the online Kiwimeter survey which calculates what it means to be a Kiwi.

Nationalism and sport are the top Kiwi values with religion at the bottom, according to the first results from the Kiwimeter online survey run by ONE News.

The preliminary results are from 30,000 people, and more than 80,000 have now completed the survey.

Aucklanders views differed from the rest of the country, putting greater value on Maori issues.

But despite the findings, academics analysing the data say both Auckland and the rest of the country still have a long way to go to support Maori rights.

"I think it shows us as a country that we need to do a little bit more to promote inclusiveness and to really recognise the diversity of this country," said Danny Osborne of Auckland University.

Aucklanders and people in other areas were neck-and-neck on what New Zealanders take pride in, with lifestyle and sporting achievements at the top of the list.

However Aucklanders were less proud of the country's history and its military.

"We know that people who live in large cities also seem more dovish in their attitudes towards military interventions," Mr Osborne said.

"As such it's not too terribly surprising that Aucklanders would express a little less pride in the military than the rest of the country."

Kiwimeter is the biggest online survey undertaken on how New Zealanders view themselves.
