Chris Black works for a kayaking business in Motueka but sings any chance he gets.

A Kiwi singer has landed in second place in the Megastar talent competition organised by singer songwriter Usher.

Chris Black was told he made it through to the top five last week and jetted off Los Angeles where he performed in front of Usher in the hopes of taking out top spot.

Megastar is an app based competition where potential singing stars send in music videos that are first judged by celebrities (including Usher) before being voted on by the public in a bid to win a trip to Los Angeles to compete for a $US1 million prize.

"I'm so passionate about it and it's something I want to do for the rest of my life so I think this is going to be a good kick start to it," Black told TVNZ1's Seven Sharp last week.

"I can't even describe it, to be able to meet Usher and potentially win $1 million would change my life," the 25-year-old said.
