Kiwi primary school kids given bikes as early Christmas present by kind-hearted Waikato businessman

A generous Waikato businessman has given a group of primary school kids an early Christmas surprise, by gifting every year one to seven student a new bike.

Sid Patel owns KBeez superettes in Huntly and Putaruru and is known around the community for his generosity towards the local children, handing out free fruit and bread to school kids all year.

Mr Patel has gone above and beyond this year though, when he handed out almost 50 bikes to the children of decile one Kawhia Primary School last Wednesday.

Video posted to Facebook by Josh Adams shows the community turning out in force to witness the generous act, as rows of new bikes are lined up outside the school waiting for the children to receive them.

"My dad would put food every day on my table, but I did miss out on presents like bikes. My philosophy, if I'm giving presents, it has to be equal for everybody," Mr Patel told Fairfax media.

The businessman also gifted year eight students of the primary Samsung 8 smartphones to help them as they moved on to their next schools out of town.

It isn't the first time Mr Patel has helped the school though, donating $30,000 worth of computers and tablets in 2015, while also purchasing stationery for them every year.

"Kawhia School in a not very healthy position, it needed a hand badly. When I went there, there were only two or three computers and mostly they were not up to standard," he told Fairfax.

Facing his own health issues, Mr Patel gifted the children the bikes to try and encourage healthy living.
