Kiwi musicians enjoy record breaking year in the charts

English star Ed Sheeran also dominated 2017 with his album Divide.

New Zealand musicians have had a record breaking year on the charts, the latest sign of an upturn in the industry’s fortunes.

However, it was Ed Sheeran’s latest album, Divide, which dominated 2017 with his single Shape of You streamed more than 16 million times.

Shape of You debuted at number one in January and hasn't left the Top 40 since.

Recorded Music New Zealand CEO Damian Vaughn said there is clearly some unique connecting here: "He makes himself available and from what I understand, he loves the place."

Lorde's album Melodrama reached number three overall, followed by the Moana soundtrack.

Mr Vaughn said having eight albums in the Top 50 by locals is great to see in a range of new artists, more established artists and "enormously popular artists".

A massive 89 diverse Kiwi acts saw their singles or albums chart for the first time.

"Across all the charts we maintain we've had a record of Kiwi entries," Mr Vaughn said.

New Zealand singer-songwriter Teeks is thrilled to reach the Top 40.

"A part of making music is wanting to connect with people and if they listen to your music and find something they can relate to, that's what it's all about," he said.

New Zealand's record business has had three years of growth after 15 years of decline. Teeks says it is proof the industry is flourishing.

"To be part of the next wave is awesome. I’m so excited to see what happens and where people go.

"It's a big time for New Zealand."
