Kiwi motorists stuck in bumper-to-bumper Easter traffic all around NZ

Kiwi motorists are crawling towards their Easter holiday destinations around New Zealand with traffic clogging up roads.

One of the worst-affected areas areas is north of Auckland with traffic ground to a standstill at the Johnstones Hill tunnels on State Highway 1, with bumper-to-bumper traffic stretching as far back as five kilometres.

The NZ Transport Agency's Easter Journey Planner website says it expects northbound traffic from Auckland between Puhoi and Wellsford to remain heavy until 6pm tonight. The same state of travel is expected around Whangārei and near Kawakawa until 6pm tonight as well.

Southbound Auckland traffic is expected to remain heavy until 4pm while those attempting to travel to the Coromandel can expect the same conditions.

There's also heavy traffic in the South Island around Christchurch and on State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura.
