Kiwi family's holiday takes terrifying turn as they're caught up in Typhoon Mangkhut

A relaxing holiday has taken a terrifying turn for a group of New Zealanders caught up in Typhoon Mangkhut.

Amy Boswell-Hore is on holiday in Hong Kong with her family, including her younger sister Meg, who is recovering from a recent bout of chemotherapy.

Her family is staying at the Disneyland Hollywood hotel, and was trapped indoors for a full day.

Speaking to 1 NEWS about the experience, Amy said the noise from the storm was "insane".

"They were barricading doors with sandbags, tying the handles together with zip ties which was a little bit scary," she said.

Amy said the winds were so strong that trees were being thrown around.

"We went outside earlier to see what it was like and these big huge trees had fallen over they were covering pathways and all sorts."

She said it was the first time she's been forced to stay inside due to extreme weather.

"We saw the occasional maintenance person go outside and check on things, and they were almost getting picked up because the wind was so strong".

While Hong Kong's Disneyland is closed today, Amy says the family plans to make the trip out sometime tomorrow.
