Kiwi design student electrifies traditional Tongan drum

Massey uni design student Rachel Hall has created the "Pato" - an award-winning modern take on a traditional Tongan drum.

A Massey university design student, Rachel Hall, has taken on the challenge of modernising the Tongan drum also known as The Lali.

Her award winning design is called the "Pato" and is an electric version of the traditional instrument.

She said "I wanted to bring the sound of the south Pacific into the modern digital environment".

The impressive electrified instrument has won multiple awards including the prestigious international design award, and the Red Dot award which will see her head to Singapore.
