Kaikōura's earthquake recovery has won one of the most prestigious engineering awards in the world.

The NZ Transport Agency, KiwiRail and the North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery alliance won the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) People’s Choice Award.

It could take out the Civil Engineers People’s Choice Award.

The project was recognised in London for the way it's transformed people's lives, not only re-opening road and rail systems, but reconnecting people and allowing businesses to welcome back tourism.

The transport agency says the job's not done yet though - work along State Highway 1 will continue next year, as a $200m package to improve the safety of the road gets underway.

It could mean a ban on paua fishing remains in place for years.

Hundreds queued on both sides of the cordon to make the journey.
