Kai time! Traffic island in coastal settlement put to good use as locals lay hangi for festive feast

January 4, 2018

The shining example of Kiwi ingenuity played out on New Year’s Eve at Point Wells, north of Auckland.

In a local tradition brought back to life, neighbours on a Point Wells cul-de-sac dug a hangi in a traffic island to feed the local community.

Instead of attempting to dig up the hard dirt in a back yard, the locals chose to cook their hangi in the traffic island at the end of a dead-end street.

After cooking was done, the locals gathered together to sit down and eat the meal on New Year's Eve as part of the local event.
