'Just like that, it's gone' - future uncertain for Kaikoura business owners


It is supposed to be the beginning of Kaikoura's peak season, and this year locals were expecting it to be a boomer.

But for Craypot Cafe and Bar owner Kevin Brown, the next 12 months look incredibly uncertain after landslides caused by the 7.5 earthquake early on Monday cut off the town.

Kaikoura business owners are having to come to terms with the long term financial impact of the quake.

Mr Brown says this season is definitely a write-off, and he doesn't know how long it will be before people start coming back.

"Tourists are our lifeline... just like that, it's gone," he told 1 NEWS.

He says they are heavily reliant on the severely damaged roads being fixed, which means it's really out of their control.
