Judge drops name suppression for Canterbury man accused of huge tyre fire

Name suppression for Garry Grimmer lapsed this morning when he appeared at the Christchurch District Court.

The man accused of torching a large pile of tyres in North Canterbury can now be named.

Garry Grimmer, 63, had interim name suppression lapse when he appeared at the Christchurch District Court this morning.

He's charged with arson for the blaze, which took hold of up to 160,000 tyres near Amberley in January.

More than a dozen fire crews are battling the blaze.

Grimmer has previously pleaded not guilty and has been remanded on bail until June.
