'Join me and vote for change' - All Blacks great Dan Carter backs new flag

Former All Black Dan Carter has appeared in a short video encouraging Kiwis to vote for change in next month's flag referendum.

"What represents the current New Zealander today is the fern," Carter says.

"So join me and vote for change."

The video, produced by campaign group Change the NZ Flag, also features former Prime Ministers Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley, netballer Maria Tutaia, radio personality Gary McCormick and former Christchurch mayor Sir Bob Parker.

Voting in the binding referendum will be held between March 3 and 24.

The flag which receives the most votes will become the official flag of New Zealand.
