MPs from across the political spectrum have come out to condemn this morning's attack against Green Party co-leader James Shaw.
The Climate Change Minister was said to be attacked on his usual walk to work through the Botanical Gardens in Wellington, about 1km from the Beehive.
1 NEWS understands the Green Party believe it was not a random attack, that it was targeted.
Police say there were several witnesses to the incident and are appealing to the public for information. A 47-year-old man has been arrested.
MPs of all sides of the political spectrum have spoken out against the attack.
National leader Simon Bridges wrote on Twitter: "Violence is never OK. From myself and the National Party we wish James Shaw a fast recovery."
"We're thinking of you and look forward to seeing you back at Parliament soon."
Mr Shaw's Green colleague Gareth Hughes wrote: The NZ Greens team are shocked this happened to James and are supporting him today. All Kiwis should be able to walk to work in safety."
The Prime Minister released a statement on the incident saying she was advised at 9am of the incident.
"I spoke to James shortly after I learned of the attack. He said he was doing fine, I tried to encourage him to take whatever time he needed to recover.
"When you go into politics in New Zealand you just don't expect these things to happen, and I know it will be especially challenging for loved ones. I would like to acknowledge the members of the public who quickly came to Minister Shaw’s assistance. I understand their quick actions assisted in the arrest.
"We have an environment in New Zealand where politicians are accessible - and that's something we should feel proud of. We are after all, here to serve people. But today's events really show we cannot take that for granted."
