Jacinda Ardern wants Clarke Gayford to 'agonise' over marriage proposal, says she won't pop the question herself

January 22, 2019

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern laughed off a question about proposing to her partner Clarke Gayford in a BBC interview today.

Ms Ardern was praised for her political style and down-to-earth personality during the interview with the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire, who went on to ask if the Prime Minister if she could imagine making a marriage proposal to Gayford herself, given she's a feminist.

Ms Ardern said she wouldn't let her partner and father of their seven-month-old daughter Neve "off the hook" of having to pop the question himself.

"Absolutely I am a feminist, but no, I want to put him through the pain and torture of having to agonise about that question himself," Ms Ardern said. "No, that's letting him off the hook."

Derbyshire replied, "Fair enough, I await that day".

Today Ms Ardern met with British Prime Minister Theresa May in London. Tomorrow she'll attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
