Jacinda Ardern defends Clare Curran's actions after suggestion RNZ explain Carol Hirschfeld scandal in writing

April 4, 2018

Due to "logistical reasons" the RNZ chair couldn’t appear in front of select committee on Thursday.

The Broadcasting Minister Clare Curran continues to face questions over the Carol Hirschfeld meeting, after she left a phone message for chair of RNZ Richard Griffin.

It comes after NewstalkZB claimed Ms Curran suggested Mr Griffin not appear in person at select committee on Thursday to correct prior statements where the committee were inadvertently misled.

Now questions have been raised over a phone message Clare Curran left for Radio NZ chair Richard Griffin.

However the Minister said that was not her intention, and the Prime Minister has said it was merely a proposal to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

This comes after a meeting last December between Ms Curran and then head of RNZ news Ms Hirschfeld. The high-profile broadcaster was said to have previously told RNZ the meeting was accidental, however she then said it was pre-planned.

1 NEWS' Political Editor Jessica Mutch asked Ms Curran if she had advised Mr Giffin that it was better he not appear in person, and the Minister said that was not her intention and she was "trying to get the record corrected as quickly as possible".

"That was the advise I had received," Ms Curran said.

On TVNZ1's Breakfast this morning PM Jacinda Ardern said she still had confidence in Ms Curran as a Minister.

"RNZ were due to appear, my understanding was on Thursday, but for logistical reasons couldn't."

Ms Ardern said when Ms Curran found this out, the Broadcasting Minister "suggested to them (RNZ) via message they could also correct the record in writing, given it would take them another week to appear".

Ms Ardern said having someone else convey that message would have been preferable, however "that was advice she felt compelled to convey".
