'It's not another tax' – Jacinda Ardern defends proposed fuel increase, says it’ll be lower than if National were in power

April 4, 2018

The PM says the benefits would be "beyond the cities"and double the amount that go to regional roads.

The government has signalled a huge investment in road safety, public transport and light rail, and a significant cut for state highways in New Zealand, the plan also includes a fuel tax of between 9-12 cents to help cover the cost.

Speaking on TVNZ1's Breakfast today Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said "every time a government policy comes out, almost every time, included in that is what will happen to excise (certain taxes) in New Zealand, so in the last 10 years it's gone up, over a six year period (while National were in government) in fact, it's gone up 17 cents."

"The trajectory for the last government was to go up to nearly 20 cents, we disagree with that."

Ms Ardern said the government were looking at about three cents per year over three years "to achieve what we need to achieve". She said they were consulting on this plan.

"It's not another tax, excise already exists."

She said doubling the amount of funding for regional roads was being looked at.
