October 19, 2017

The 1 News team brings you the latest weather update.

New Zealand has today experienced its warmest temperatures since April and they've hit near records in the central South Island.

Otematata in Canterbury lead with 30.1 degrees recorded at 5pm and Cromwell in Central Otago earlier reached 27.9, its second warmest October temperature on record, NIWA reports.

Ranfurly in Otago had a maximum of 25.1 degrees, the second warmest October reading since records began in 1896, the weather agency tweeted.

In the Central Otago town of Alexandra, a group of young teachers from the US had a run around with an American football on the town's playing field, most of them shirtless in temperatures in the mid-twenties.

"It's beautiful right now to us," one of the young men told 1 NEWS.

"In the states right now it's probably about the same, maybe a little chillier, but this is fantastic for us."

As NIWA put it, "Summer is not too far off!"
