Ireland's president welcomed to NZ with pomp and ceremony

Michael D Higgins was welcomed by the Governor General, as well as Wellington school kids.

The President of Ireland has arrived in New Zealand for a week-long state visit.

Michael D. Higgins was given a welcome full of pomp and ceremony at Government House in Wellington this afternoon.

He was met by Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy, a guard of honour, and some local school kids who Mr Higgins addressed in his native tongue.

Prime Minister-designate Jacinda Ardern will welcome Mr Higgins at Parliament House tomorrow morning.
