Investigation launched into cause of Wellington scrub fire

Fire and Emergency NZ turned out to the fire in the hills late Saturday afternoon.

An investigation has been launched to determine what started a scrub fire in the capital’s town belt, above Wadestown, yesterday afternoon.

A shift manager for Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s central communication unit said a rural fire investigator has just left the blackened area of bush and trees after arriving at the scene around 8.30am this morning.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 3.50pm yesterday, with plumes of smoke seen in the central city from as far away as Eastbourne on the other side of the harbour.

The fire was deemed completely out just before 9.40pm last night.

The shift manager said police have also been at the scene today and no cause has been reported at this stage.

Rural fire staff remain on guard there to monitor the situation.
